What is the Keto Dieting?
The Keto Dieting is an eating plan that drastically restricts carbohydrates. When the body does not get enough carbs, it canโt use sugar for energy and starts to break down fat for fuel. This process is called ketogenesis. It usually begins within three to four days of starting a low carb diet. When the liver breaks down fat, it produces acetone and beta-hydroxybutyric acid, which are used as energy by the cells.
The keto diet is often recommended by doctors to treat certain types of epilepsy in children, particularly in cases where medications donโt work. Itโs also used by people with Type 2 diabetes to manage their condition and may help with weight loss, as it is high in fat and protein but low in carbohydrates.
Choosing keto herbs and vegetables
The foods on the keto diet are very high in fat and include fish, shellfish, meats, poultry, eggs, cheese, butter, avocado, coconut oil and cream, berries, tomatoes and other vegetables (except for root veggies and tubers), and nuts. The best vegetable options are cruciferous and leafy greens, including kale, Swiss chard, spinach, and broccoli (a cup of chopped broccoli has about six carbs).
However, the keto diet is restrictive and lacks the important nutrients found in fruits, legumes, grains, vegetables, and whole foods. As a result, some people experience deficiencies, such as foggy thinking, irritability, gastrointestinal distress, fatigue, and constipation. If youโre considering following a ketogenic diet, talk to an accredited practising dietitian.
