Keto Dieting Herbs
The keto diet allows you to eat more fat, protein and fewer carbohydrates. When your body lacks carbs it turns to stored fat for energy, a process called ketosis. This may help you lose weight, improve your health and reduce the need for medication in some people with diabetes. It can also help reverse non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).
A Keto diet is high in fat and protein and low in carbs, with about 70 percent of your calories coming from fat, 20 percent from protein and 5 percent from carbohydrates. It was originally developed to treat certain types of childhood epilepsy and is now a popular way to lose weight. If you’re interested in trying it, talk to your doctor first.
In addition to reducing the amount of carbohydrates you eat, limiting processed foods and adding more vegetables, fruits, nuts and seeds can help you eat a healthier diet. However, this approach is likely to increase the amount of saturated fat you eat, and current government guidelines recommend that adults consume no more than 30 grams of saturated fat per day.
When it comes to herbs, most are safe to use on the Keto diet, though some like smoked paprika do have a small number of carbohydrates (7 carbs/tbl) which should be avoided if you’re trying to stay below 10 total carbs/day. The table below lists herbs and their carb counts for 1 tablespoon/sprig.
